Privacy Policy
Knot in Time ("Knot," "the app," "we," "us," or "our") is a personal journaling and tracking app provided by Nikhil Kishore. This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled when you use the Knot in Time app or visit knotintime.com.
The short version
Knot is designed to keep your personal information on your device. You do not need an account. We do not operate a backend that receives your journal, tracker, health, photo, or location information. We do not use advertising SDKs, third-party analytics, or cross-app tracking, and we do not sell your personal information.
Information you create in Knot
Depending on how you use the app, Knot may process and store the following information locally on your device:
- trackers, goals, streaks, schedules, completion history, notes, and preferences;
- journal entries, titles, tags, moods, dates, and photos you choose to attach;
- health-related entries you choose to create, such as medication names, schedules, doses, symptoms, behaviors, and notes;
- locations you choose for location-based trackers, including a place name, coordinates, and monitoring radius;
- notification schedules and app settings; and
- images and insights generated with supported Apple on-device features.
This information is used only to provide features inside the app, such as showing your history, calculating trends and streaks, generating insights, scheduling reminders, and automatically logging a tracker at a location you selected.
Information we collect
We do not automatically collect or receive your in-app content, usage history, device identifiers, location history, or health-related information. Knot does not include developer-operated analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting services.
If you contact us for support, we receive the information you voluntarily send, such as your email address, message, and any attachments. We use it only to respond, troubleshoot, protect the app and its users, and meet legal obligations. Please do not send sensitive journal or health information in a support request unless it is necessary.
Device permissions and Apple services
Knot requests permissions only when they are needed for a feature you choose to use:
- Location: If you enable location auto-tracking, Knot uses location access to save a place and detect arrival, including through iOS region monitoring while the app is not open. Saved locations and check-ins remain in the app's local data. You can disable location access in Knot or iOS Settings.
- Camera and Photos: If you choose to add an image, Knot uses the camera or photo library to obtain that image and stores an app-owned copy locally. Knot does not scan or upload your photo library.
- Notifications: If you enable reminders, Knot uses Apple's local notification system to deliver them. You can change notification permission in iOS Settings.
- On-device intelligence: On supported devices, Knot uses Apple's on-device Foundation Models, Core ML, and Image Playground capabilities to organize journal content, generate insights, or create images. Knot does not send the prompts or results to a server operated by us.
- Maps and geocoding: Map display and place-name lookup use Apple platform services. Apple may process requests and device information under Apple's own privacy terms. We do not receive that information.
Your use of Apple services, the App Store, iCloud, device backups, Maps, and Apple Intelligence is also subject to Apple's terms and privacy policy.
Backups, exports, and sharing
Knot lets you create a backup file containing your app data and attached images. New backups are encrypted on your device using industry-standard AES-256-GCM authenticated encryption before the iOS share sheet opens. A recovery password is required to decrypt the backup on another device. Knot does not receive the backup, password, or encryption keys.
If you choose biometric convenience, Knot stores a random device-only key in Apple's Keychain, protected by the currently enrolled Face ID or Touch ID set. That key does not replace the recovery password, does not migrate to a new device, and can become unavailable if biometric enrollment changes. You can still restore the backup with its recovery password.
If you choose Save to Passwords, iOS asks for permission to save the recovery password to Apple Passwords through iCloud Keychain. Apple handles that saved credential under Apple's terms and privacy policy. We do not receive or have access to it.
We do not receive your backup. After it leaves Knot, it is handled by the destination you selected, such as Files, iCloud Drive, email, or another app, and that provider's privacy practices apply. A backup may contain sensitive journal, health, photo, and location information. Backups created by earlier versions of Knot may not be encrypted. Keep every backup in a secure location and delete copies you no longer need.
Knot may create a temporary plaintext payload locally while preparing or opening an encrypted backup. The app deletes that temporary file immediately after the operation on a best-effort basis.
iCloud and device backups
Although Knot does not provide its own cloud synchronization service, iOS may include app data in an iCloud or computer device backup depending on your Apple settings. Apple controls those backups; we do not receive or manage them. You can review your backup settings in iOS Settings.
Retention and deletion
Your information remains on your device until you delete it in Knot or remove the app. You can delete individual journal entries, trackers, streaks, health trackers, and related history through the app's controls. Removing Knot generally removes its local app container, subject to copies retained in device backups or files you exported.
To fully remove exported data, you must also delete backup files and shared copies from every location where you stored them. You can revoke camera, photo, location, or notification permissions at any time through iOS Settings.
Support emails are retained only as long as reasonably necessary to respond, resolve the issue, maintain appropriate records, or comply with law.
Disclosure of information
We do not sell, rent, or share your in-app information because we do not receive it. We may disclose support communications if required by law, necessary to protect rights or safety, or involved in a transfer of the app, subject to applicable legal protections.
Security
Knot relies on Apple's app sandbox and iOS security controls to protect local data. No method of storage is completely secure. Protect your device with a passcode, keep iOS updated, control access to device and cloud backups, and store exported files carefully.
Children
Knot is a general-purpose personal organization tool and is not designed to collect personal information from children. Because in-app information is not sent to us, we do not knowingly collect a child's journal or tracking data. A parent or guardian should supervise use when required by applicable law.
International users and your rights
Your local privacy laws may provide rights concerning personal information. In most cases, we cannot access, retrieve, correct, or delete information stored only on your device. You can manage that information directly in Knot, delete the app, revoke permissions in iOS Settings, and delete any exported copies.
For information you sent to support, you may contact us to request access, correction, or deletion, subject to applicable law.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Knot changes or legal requirements evolve. We will update the date above and, when appropriate, provide notice through the app or website. Material new data practices will be described before they take effect where required.
