Clear terms, plain language
Terms of Use
These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your use of the Knot in Time mobile app, website, and related features (together, "Knot" or the "Service"), provided by Nikhil Kishore ("we," "us," or "our"). By downloading, accessing, or using Knot, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. What Knot provides
Knot is a free, local-first personal journaling and tracking tool. It can help you record goals, habits, streaks, journal entries, reminders, health-related logs, and location-based check-ins. Knot does not require an account and does not currently provide developer-operated cloud synchronization.
Knot is provided for personal, noncommercial use. Features may differ by device, operating-system version, region, permissions, and availability of Apple technologies such as Apple Intelligence and Image Playground.
2. Eligibility
You must be legally able to agree to these Terms. If applicable law requires a parent or guardian to approve your use, that person must review and agree to these Terms on your behalf.
3. License
Subject to these Terms and the applicable App Store terms, we grant you a limited, personal, nonexclusive, nontransferable, revocable license to install and use Knot on Apple devices you own or control for personal purposes.
You may not copy, sell, rent, sublicense, distribute, reverse engineer, bypass security protections, interfere with operation of the Service, or use Knot in an unlawful manner, except where applicable law expressly permits the activity.
4. Your content
You retain ownership of journal entries, photos, tracker data, and other content you create or import. You are responsible for that content and for having the rights needed to use any photo or other material you place in Knot.
Your content is generally stored locally on your device. We do not claim a license to your private in-app content because it is not submitted to us. Limited processing by device features is permitted only as needed to provide the features you request.
Do not use Knot to create, store, or share content that violates the law or the rights of another person.
5. Local storage and backups
You are responsible for maintaining access to your device and for making and protecting any backups you need. Device failure, app deletion, operating-system changes, a forgotten backup password, corrupted files, or other events may cause permanent data loss.
Knot may let you export data through the iOS share sheet. Exported files can contain sensitive journal, photo, health, and location information. Store them carefully. Once you send a file to Files, iCloud, email, another app, or another person, that destination is outside our control.
New backups created by Knot are encrypted and require a recovery password. Backups created by earlier app versions may not be encrypted. You are responsible for remembering or securely storing the recovery password. We cannot recover a password or decrypt a backup for you.
Face ID or Touch ID unlock is an optional convenience for backups created on the same device. The device key does not migrate and may become unavailable if the device passcode or enrolled biometrics change. The recovery password remains the portable way to restore a backup. If you ask iOS to save that password to Apple Passwords, Apple's terms and privacy policy also apply.
6. Location, notifications, and permissions
Features requiring location, photos, camera access, notifications, or other device capabilities are optional and depend on permissions you control. You can revoke permissions in iOS Settings, although doing so may disable related features.
Location detection and notifications are not guaranteed to occur at an exact time or place. They may be delayed or unavailable because of device settings, battery management, operating-system behavior, signal conditions, permissions, or other factors.
7. Health and safety disclaimer
Knot is a personal organization tool. It is not a medical device, medical record system, emergency service, or substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
Medication reminders, symptom logs, health insights, schedules, and generated content may be incomplete, delayed, inaccurate, or unavailable. Do not rely on Knot as your only way to remember medication or make health decisions. Verify medication names, doses, timing, and instructions with a qualified healthcare professional. Never disregard professional advice because of information shown by Knot. In an emergency, contact local emergency services.
8. Generated and analytical content
Knot may calculate trends or use on-device machine-learning and generative-AI features to organize entries, suggest trackers, generate text or images, and provide insights. Generated output may be inaccurate, inappropriate, incomplete, or unexpected. It is provided for reflection and convenience, not as factual, medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice.
You are responsible for reviewing generated output before relying on or sharing it. Availability and results may change when Apple updates its models, operating systems, or platform services.
9. Third-party and Apple services
Knot depends on Apple-provided services and software, including iOS, the App Store, local notifications, Maps, geocoding, device backups, and optional Apple Intelligence features. Your use of those services is governed by Apple's terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for third-party services, availability, or actions.
The Apple Media Services Terms and Apple's standard licensed-application terms may also apply to your download and use of the app. Apple is not responsible for providing maintenance or support for Knot except as required by applicable law or Apple's own terms.
10. Changes, updates, and availability
We may add, remove, change, suspend, or discontinue features, and we may release updates needed for security, compatibility, or functionality. We do not promise that Knot will always be available, remain free, work on every device, or support every older backup format forever. If a paid feature is introduced in the future, its price and terms will be disclosed before purchase.
11. Intellectual property
Except for your content and third-party materials, Knot—including its software, design, name, graphics, and documentation—is owned by us or our licensors and is protected by applicable intellectual-property laws. No rights are granted except for the limited license stated in these Terms.
12. Disclaimer of warranties
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Knot is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, availability, security, and noninfringement.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions, so some of this section may not apply to you. Nothing in these Terms limits rights that cannot lawfully be waived.
13. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, health consequences, missed reminders, lost profits, or business interruption arising from or related to Knot.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim relating to the free Service will not exceed US $50. This limitation does not apply where liability cannot lawfully be limited, including any liability that applicable law expressly makes nonexcludable.
14. Suspension and termination
You may stop using Knot at any time by deleting the app. We may suspend or end access to the Service if reasonably necessary to protect users, comply with law, enforce these Terms, or discontinue the Service. Sections that by their nature should survive termination—including ownership, disclaimers, and liability limitations—will remain in effect.
15. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws applicable where the Service provider is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Mandatory consumer protections and any right to bring a claim in your local courts remain unaffected where they cannot legally be waived.
Before filing a formal claim, please contact us and give us a reasonable opportunity to resolve the issue informally.
16. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as Knot changes or legal requirements evolve. We will update the date above and provide additional notice when required. Continuing to use Knot after updated Terms take effect means you accept them, to the extent permitted by law.
